1. Grand Hotel de l'Abbaye, Beaugency

This former abbey was established in the 12th century and then rebuilt in the 17th century and today it retains all of its architectural splendour. Now a grand hotel, it over looks the Loire river in Beaugency and has simply elegant rooms which retain the monastic feel.

The 19 rooms are all equipped with a flat screen tv, a mini-bar, a safe, a hair dryer and Wi-Fi. They are thoughtfully decorated to respect the original house and its history, using antique furniture and original materials. The views are of the Loire and the Beaugency bridge.

Room service is available throughout most of the day.

In the evening, guests can dine at the abbey, in the veranda or on the terrace. Grillied meat, including local free range chicken and fish are cooked on the 17th century rotisserie. A separate children's menu is also available.

2. Diderot Hotel, Chinon

This lovely 18th century manor house has beautiful individually decorated rooms. A friendly place with lovely rustic fare and homemade jams, this is an absolute find. Close to Chinon centre, it has a great location too. Its status on Trip Advisor says it all.

Special attention has been paid to ensure the rooms are quiet, using soundproofing. The superior quality of bedding ensures a comfortable nights sleep.

In the morning, guests can enjoy locally produced cheese and honey, as well as French breads, brioche and croissants with their homemade jam selection. This can be enjoyed on the shaded terrace in the summer, or by the fireplace in the autumn. There are also gluten free options on request.

3. La Tonnellerie Hotel, Tavers

This is a great hotel in a charming old manor house. With just 20 rooms, it has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and an adorable terrace with an outdoor heated pool.

The rooms have all been individually designed and furnished in Louis Philippe style and are all wll equipped with a full bathroom with hairdryer, LCD television, with some English channels, telephone and free unlimited wifi access.

The restaurant offers home-made and locally sourced French cuisine, and where possible organic. Special attention is made to selecting the producers who keep a respect for the environment. Separate children's menus are available.

Breakfast is a buffet including local organic bread, nuts, dried fruit, fruit juices and organic cereal. Local products including homemade jams and local honey produced in the village will also be present. In the summer, both dinner and breakfast can be enjoyed on the terrace.

Newly renovated in 2015, the outdoor pool is heated to between 25-28 degrees, and has a security barrier for children. It is open from May-October subject to weather.

4. L'ecu de Bretagne Hotel, Beaugency

This small inn in the centre of the lovely village of Beaugency offers 29 well-presented rooms and has recently added an outdoor swimming pool in the grounds. It's a pretty place to stop and offers very good value.

Each of the well appointed rooms are soundproofed, with their own individual heating and air conditioning systems. They each have a free minibar, a television, a bathroom and free Wi-Fi. There are also some options for connecting family rooms to make a large suite.

For dining there is a restaurant and a brasserie. Both provide authentic, seasonal food.

At the restaurant, you will find a cosy and refined dining room, with a menu combining traditional dishes with simple style. An extensive wine list will accompany your meal. Showcasing many of the local wines from the Loire Valley.

The brasserie also is based on regional dishes in a less formal setting. Here, you can also sample the local wines with your meal.

Mail Hotel, Angers double bedroom

5. Du Mail Hotel, Angers

This charming 17th century town house, formerly part of the old Ursuline Convent, has been turned into a lovely contemporary hotel. There is a welcoming courtyard where you can eat breakfast and the rooms are well decorated in a more traditional fashion. Very good value for money.

There are 25 well equipped rooms. Each comprising of an LCD TV, a mini-bar a bathroom with shower or bath, a WC and a hair-dryer. Two of the rooms are on the ground floor and are accessible for those with reduced mobility.

Breakfast can be taken in the rooms for an extra charge.

6. La Maison d'a Cote Hotel, Montivault

This former village inn has been converted into a charming but contemporary hotel retaining some of the original features. It has a lovely terrace opening out onto a secret garden and a great Michelin starred restaurant run by Christophe Hay.

The menu is creative and simple, simple and light and changes frequently.

Rivage Hotel, Olivet exterior

7. Rivage Hotel, Olivet

Sited on the banks of the river Loiret, this stylish hotel offers immaculate rooms in a wonderful setting. It has pretty gardens with covered walkways and a good restaurant. It's a nice alternative close to Orléans if you don't want to stay in the city.

The hotel has seventeen bedrooms, which are air-conditioned and are equipped with all mod-cons including WIFI.

The restaurant is in a pretty and peaceful setting on the river, set in the shade of willow trees. The menu provides a taste of local cuisine including fish, game and fresh vegetables.

8. Saint-Pierre Hotel, Saumur

Located on a quiet street in the centre of Saumur, this is a great place to stopover. It has attractive, though small, rooms which have been fully refurbished. Numerous famous French men and women have stayed over here.

Choose from a selection of rooms, all equipped with air conditioning, a mini-bar, TV and WIFI. The rooms each have their own personal detail and are decorated stylishly.

The hotel has a terrace to relax in, and a bar with an extensive whisky collection.

This peaceful and rustic family hotel is located just outside Blois and offers a friendly and pleasant stay. With rooms nicely finished by Daphnée Boussard, each one is individual. The real feature here is restaurant run by Grégory Boussard which is the heart of this hotel.

The rooms are well equipped with all modern conveniences including TV, air conditioning, hair dryer and mini-bar. Four of the rooms have a balneotherapy bathtub, for the ultimate relaxation experience.

At the heart of the hotel is the welcoming and relaxed restaurant. The cuisine is a fusion of regional produce, such as locally sourced asparagus, red berries, game and wild mushrooms, with some fresh and creative twists.

There is an extensive wine list of 300 labels, from young to vintage wines sourced from vineyards, both locally or further afield.
