Whilst the Loire Valley region does not per se have a coastline, there are a number of lovely beaches around Saint Nazaire which are worth mentioning. Saint-Nazare is known as the town of 20 beaches and is the start point on the Côte d'Amour coastline which heads north to Le Croisic. There are lots of fine sandy beaches, rocky outcrops and little coves to explore.

La Courance

La Courance is located just a few kilometres from the centre of Saint-Nazaire and is a popular surfing spot because of its south facing beach. This beach break is suitable for surfers of all levels and works only when there is plenty of swell. It's also good for skim-boarding.

La Grand Plage

This was one of the first popular beaches in the area, gaining crowds as early as the late 19th century when bathing in the sea became a fashionable pastime. In 1895, a casino was built on the boulevard behind the beach. Though less crammed than a hundred years ago, it is still a popular wide sandy beach.

Saint-Marc

The beach at Saint-Marc is probably the most popular in the Saint Nazaire area because it was the location for Jacques Tati's 1953 film, "Mr Hulot's Holiday". Behind the beach, a statue of the film-maker watches over its fine sands. This beach has been accredited for its disabled access.

Villes-Martin

This beach is a popular spot and its fine sands are covered in parasols in the summer months when it is also supervised by lifeguards. Sunset behind the pretty lighthouse is a must. It is also accredited for its disabled access to the beach.
